What is the Stock Selection Process for the Nifty Auto index?
The index is calculated using a weighted system based on the free-float market capitalisation of its 15 constituent stocks. The weights are periodically capped and computed in real time against a base market value. Free float shares represent the portion available for public trading, excluding promoter holdings.The index maintains strict eligibility criteria for stock inclusion. Companies must be listed on the National Stock Exchange and be part of the NIFTY 500. The Nifty auto index today reflects this selection process, where if eligible stocks fall below 10, additional stocks can be selected from the top 800 ranked companies. This selection is based on turnover and market capitalisation data from the previous six months.
To qualify, stocks must belong to the Automobiles sector and demonstrate consistent trading activity with at least 90% trading frequency over six months. While established companies need six months of listing history, newly listed companies through IPOs can qualify after three months if they meet other criteria.
To maintain balance, the index implements weight caps. A single stock cannot exceed 33% weight, and the top three stocks combined cannot exceed 62% at rebalancing.
How is the Nifty Auto Calculated?
Nifty Auto uses a precise calculation method to track the performance of automotive sector stocks. The formula it uses is - Index value = Current market capitalisation/ (Base market capitalisation * Base Index Value)The index undergoes a systematic review and rebalancing process twice a year. These reviews are conducted based on six months of market data, with January 31 and July 31 serving as the cutoff dates.
