But what exactly does it mean? Why should you care?<\/span><\/p>\n

Think of <\/span>rolling settlement<\/span> as the \u201cdelivery day\u201d for your stock trades. You hit “Buy” or “Sell” on your trading platform, but the actual transfer of money and shares doesn\u2019t happen immediately. There\u2019s a whole process behind the scenes, and that\u2019s where <\/span>rolling settlement<\/span> comes in.<\/span><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s simplify: <\/b>Imagine ordering food online. You pay now, but the meal shows up 30\u201345 minutes later. You don\u2019t get your lunch instantly, but it\u2019s in progress.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>What is a Rolling Settlement?<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

It\u2019s the system the stock market uses to finalize trades. When you place a buy or sell order, the deal is <\/span>agreed upon<\/span><\/i> instantly, but the actual settlement, where shares and funds are exchanged, takes place after a fixed period.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>rolling settlement meaning<\/b> lies in the word \u201crolling.\u201d Instead of processing all trades in a batch at the end of the week (as was common earlier), trades are now settled on a <\/span>daily rolling basis<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

That means each day\u2019s transactions are settled independently of the previous day\u2019s. It\u2019s a continuous cycle. So, Tuesday\u2019s trades are settled on Wednesday, Wednesday\u2019s on Thursday, and so on.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>How Does <\/span>Rolling Settlement<\/span> Work?<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

Let\u2019s say you buy 50 shares of Infosys on a Wednesday. Here’s what happens behind the scenes:<\/span><\/p>\n

Currently, in India, we use a <\/span>T+1 settlement cycle<\/b>. That means trades are settled on the <\/span>next trading day<\/span><\/i> (T + 1). If you buy shares on Monday, they\u2019ll be delivered to your demat account by Tuesday. Likewise, if you sell shares, the money hits your bank account<\/strong> <\/a>the next day.<\/span><\/p>\n
